At the beginning of your post you mentioned maps -- at the risk of "tooting our own horn" I'd like to tell you about the pull-out Beining map that's included for free in the 2008 edition of the Insider's Guide to Beijing -- it's absolutely the best bilingual English/Chinese map I've seen for the city to date. It's produced by a government agency but it is much more polished than what you'd expect.

It's portable, complete, and best of all, it's printed on waterproof, tear-resistant paper! 

One side is the city map and the other is sort of a National Geographic style treatment of the Olympic venues in Beijing. It's truly awesome!</description>
