That’s Beijing Magazine

Usually top must-haves of a tourist are a map, handy bag/wallet, cellphone, passport etc. When I first arrived in Beijing, I got the map but I couldn’t quite understand the roads. Beijing is a really big area to navigate through. The free map will only tell you the usual so you can skip that.

When you get to Beijing, go to a restaurant in Chaoyang and for sure they have free copies of That’s Beijing magazine. This never ceases to amaze me of all the things you can actually go, do, explore in Beijing. For typical English speaking tourists, this is a very helpful piece to bring around if you want to try something new. That’s Beijing Magazine has a long list of restaurants of different cuisines, places you can visit plus the telephone number for you to ask for a reservation.

Every month, there’ll be a unique feature of the month for readers to be amazed how cosmopolitan Beijing is rather than the typical notion of restricted conservative life in Beijing. So save your copies for life, the mini-yellow pages will surely be of BIG help next time you visit again!

Thanks for the kind words for our magazine!

At the beginning of your post you mentioned maps — at the risk of “tooting our own horn” I’d like to tell you about the pull-out Beining map that’s included for free in the 2008 edition of the Insider’s Guide to Beijing — it’s absolutely the best bilingual English/Chinese map I’ve seen for the city to date. It’s produced by a government agency but it is much more polished than what you’d expect.

It’s portable, complete, and best of all, it’s printed on waterproof, tear-resistant paper!

One side is the city map and the other is sort of a National Geographic style treatment of the Olympic venues in Beijing. It’s truly awesome!
