Beijing Subway
December 6, 2007
Beijing has a notorious subway line not just of the crowded area but more of the smell. Well, I’m not really discouraging people to use the subway because it’s rather convenient on some parts of Beijing. Going to Wangfujing or to Forbidden city is easier through this.
Ultimately, you never been to Beijing until you tried riding the subway during peak hours! I mean, literally, an adventure. People wouldn’t really care if the train seemed like a big tin can of sardines full of people. You would have to push your way out even if it feels like part of you is stuck somewhere in the middle of the train!

Also, be aware of the smell inside. Ok..this seems like a bad review, but with a getting used to, you can survive the ride. It’s definitely cheaper (around 1-2 RMB per ride), a far cry from the expensive taxis which has a flagdown rate of 10 RMB.
But for the most part, I think the subway is ok. People on a budget can maximize their money using this transporation. It’s definitely faster than using the local buses.

I’ve been to Wotaokou station which is above ground. We usually go down Xizhimen to change line (to the main red line). This station is also the stop near Beijing Zoo. I haven’t gone to other stations beside the main shopping area and tourist station.
I believe the government still have ongoing plans of expanding the subway system to cover more areas. come 2008 I believe…
