Beijing Center for Performing Arts

Date December 8, 2007

This is one of the anticipated architectural masterpiece designed by the French architect Jean Andreu. Formally known as National Grand Theatre, Beijing Center for Performing Arts opens to the public this December 22, 2007.

An inaugural concert will be given by the China National Symphony Orchestra (CNSO) and the Beijing Symphony Orchestra. Soloist Li Yundi, a young Chinese pianist, will play a piece by Maurice Ravel, said Deng Yijiang, deputy president of the National Center for the Performing Arts, during a news briefing.

The Mariinsky Theater Opera Company (known until 1991 as the Kirov), from St Petersburg, Russia, will perform Alexander Borodin’s Prince Igor on December 25. It will be the first foreign art troupe to give a performance in the building.

The futuristic ‘egg-shaped’ building is an irony to their neighbor, Forbidden city, with its modern design.

The National Grand Theatre, which lies to the west of Tiananmen Square, boasts three gigantic halls—a 2,400-seat opera house, a 2,000-seat concert hall and a 1,000-seat theatre.

One third of the performances are staged by foreign groups. Even the famous Shakespeare play Othello and musical Swan Lake will be featured between Dec 22,2007- April 6, 2008. This is a great news for play & opera enthusiasts. According to Deng, to reach a wider audience in Beijing, the prices of tickets will be priced around 30yuan (USD$4). That’s quite cheap for a good play!

This is another plus points for 2008 Summer Olympics here in Beijing.

You can check out tickets at this site however it’s not in English yet.
